One of the biggest things I’ve seen – both in medicine and in my own life – is this:
We often focus on managing symptoms without ever addressing the root cause.
And while there is absolutely a place for medical treatment, many of the most common health struggles we face today are deeply connected to our lifestyle.
That’s where a root-cause health approach becomes so important.
Because when you support your body the way God designed it to function, in turn, it can do a better job of supporting you in the long run.
So, let’s talk about what practices support your health at the foundation.
9 Lifestyle Habits That Support Your Health at the Root
These are the habits I come back to again and again – personally, and with patients.
1. Water
Your body depends on proper hydration for nearly every function.
From energy levels to digestion to focus – water plays a key role.
Simple place to start:
Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning.
2. Hope
This might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to health, but it matters more than we realize.
Your mindset, your stress levels, and your outlook all impact your physical health.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him…”
— Romans 15:13
Simple place to start:
Spend a few minutes each day focusing on truth, gratitude, or prayer.
3. Outdoors
Getting outside – even for a short time – can support both your mental and physical well-being.
Fresh air, sunlight, and nature all play a role in helping your body reset.
Simple place to start:
Step outside for 10–15 minutes each day.
4. Love
Connection and community are essential for your health.
We were not created to do life alone.
“For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”
— Ecclesiastes 4:10
Simple place to start:
Reach out to someone, even with a simple text or conversation.
5. Environment
Your surroundings influence your habits more than you think.
What you keep in your home, your routine, and your daily environment all shape your choices.
Simple place to start:
Make one small change to your environment that supports your health (like limiting screen time or keeping healthier foods visible).
6. Nutrition
What you eat fuels your body.
Focusing on nourishing, whole foods can support your energy, digestion, and overall well-being.
Simple place to start:
Add more whole, unprocessed foods into your meals.
7. Exercise
Movement doesn’t have to be extreme to be effective.
Consistent, enjoyable movement is what makes the biggest difference.
Simple place to start:
Go for a walk, stretch, or do something you enjoy.
8. Slowing Down
Rest is not optional – it’s essential.
In a fast-paced world, intentionally slowing down helps regulate your body and mind.
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’”
— Psalm 46:10
Simple place to start:
Build small moments of rest into your day – even a few minutes at a time.
9. Substances
What you consume – whether it’s food, alcohol, or other substances – impacts your health.
Being mindful here can make a significant difference over time.
Simple place to start:
Pay attention to one area where you can reduce or replace something that isn’t serving you.
Why These Habits Work
What makes these daily habits for better health so powerful is that they support your body as a whole system.
And not only is it more effective to improve your health naturally, but it’s much more affordable and only becomes easier as time goes on.
Instead of constantly searching for the next solution…you’re building a foundation that supports your health long-term.
You Don’t Have to Do All 9 at Once
If you’re looking at this list and thinking, “This feels like a lot,” I want to reassure you:
You do not have to change everything overnight.
In fact, lasting change almost never happens that way.
Start with the one that feels the most doable right now.
Because consistency – not perfection – is what leads to real results.
A Clear Path Forward
After years of watching symptoms resolve – for me, for my patients, and for my dad who has far outlived his prognosis – I created a framework around these habits so you don’t have to piece it all together on your own.
Because when you have a clear, step-by-step path, it becomes so much easier to take action and stay consistent.
